Fitting a lock to a wooden door.
Drill holes on this centre line the same width as your lock fig.
Remove the lock and carefully chisel out a recess for the faceplate to sit in.
Drill the cylinder hole by using an auger or expanding drill bit make sure you use the correct size.
Create a mortise for the plate around the latch on your door using the technique described above.
Fitting a barrel or sliding bolt is one of the easier diy projects.
First mark out the place where the strike plate has to be fitted.
You will need to decide on what type of sliding bolt or barrel bolt you are going to use there are quite a few available.
This process will vary somewhat based on the doorknob you are installing.
Select the position of the lock use the lock as a template to position the screw fixings.
Set a marking gauge to half the thickness of the door fig.
Chisel away a small amount of wood at a time to open the drill holes into a clean rectangular hole to fit your lock.
Hold the lock up to the door and make a mark where the cylinder and fixing holes will be.
Fitting the lock insert the lock into the mortise and mark around the faceplate.
Different types of door bolt.
A non tested night latch can be used for access but it must be supported with a tested lock so you would have two locks on the door.
The mortice lock was dealt with in a similar way but i made the disk slightly thinner and recessed the lock surround below the face of the door so that the key could be turned more easily.
3 once the space is ready sit the lock case in add the cover plate and draw around all four edges.

The best lock for a wooden door is a lock that meets the requirement of bs3621 the type of lock fitted can be a night latch mortice deadlock or mortice sash lock.
Turn the key so the locking bolt protrudes from the lock and hold the door against the door frame.
After you ve fitted the lock in the door you need to fit the strike plate to the door frame.
Create a mortise and holes for your lock and door handle.
Then use a drill to make the necessary holes for installation of your doorknob door handle and lock.
Use a chisel to smooth the sides of the slot and clean away any excess wood so that the lock will fit easily.
This will need to be no more than 3 4mm deep.
8 and score a line down the door edge to mark the position of the lock.
